Dropping its pin on the map, 2648 opened up for business in February 2015 ready to make its debut in the Cambridge bar scene. Conveniently placed on one of most popular boutique shopping streets in Cambridge, this nifty little bar is cleverly tucked away underneath all the hustle and bustle of the city crowd.

Sandwiched between the stores Jigsaw and Space NK you can find an intriguing open door hypnotising you with its Hollywood show lights. Once leading you down small wooden staircase into the underground space you will be ready to experience one of the coolest bars in Cambridge.

Carrying the slogan ‘Booze.Food.Music’, 2648 doesn’t beat around the bush with a straight up attitude with what’s offered in their underground bar. Once you’ve grabbed a table surrounded by the quirky Motown themed décor you can get comfortable and take a look at the extensive list of drinks and cocktails they’ve formulated to get your alcoholic taste buds tingling.

With their customer favourites being the Elderflower Collins, Cosmo and Espresso Martini, the bar also offers their own exciting range of house specials which are currently addressed under the ‘Spring Menu’. These cocktails boast a combination of new flavours offering a captivating choice in drinks, from the likes of ‘Paddington’s Mistake’ which includes Seville orange marmalade to the ‘Cinnamon Roll’ where they wet smoke the glass and light a cinnamon stick on fire. Each are created by the passionate collaboration of the bar staff.

One particularly striking menu they showcase is their carefully concocted Tequila list, which may perhaps haunt you with flash backs of previous night’s when you’ve knocked a couple back and hoped you’d remember the taxi ride home. However, this selection of shots take on a new path from the “salt-tequila-lemon” ritual. Dan the General Manager at 2648 says “so many people have this bad memory of awful tequila that was one pound a shot and got way too drunk on it. We want to open up people’s eyes to tequila being something different and not dirty, something special.”

After receiving professional tequila training with Mangrove, the independent Sprits Agency and Distribution Company, 2648 honed their new found knowledge and skill to present a unique and fun tequila drinking experience.

In case you were feeling a little peckish after the shots you can also grab a nibble from their finger food menu.

You can take a look at the menu here.

With a Monday to Friday table service, Matt explains that the bar likes to distinguish itself from others with the personal approach they adopt. “We actually designate someone to walk around to just chat to people, a more personal approach” he states. Somewhere you can expect the staff to care about their customers and take an interest in their day. Along with the friendly staff you can expect to find yourself in a very relaxed, casual and generally chilled out bar.

This cosy approach makes it a winner for all kinds of people looking to sit down for a drink. The usual gathering of locals on a Friday and Saturday ranging typically from 20-40 year olds to groups of students on their ‘Half-Price

Sundays’ where you can grab a beer, wine or cocktail for half the usual pretty penny.

Setting the tone is the diverse selection of music they play, changing each day. Dan mentions “we gauge the music on the type of customers in that night, we read the crowd and go from there”. Taking on the Motown vibe, the music is still open to a diverse selection, therefore, not restricting themselves as a themed-bar. Wednesday nights are listed as ‘Open Mic’ night, where artists can come down and sing their tunes. They also provide the occasional events where you tend to find acoustic, jazz or Motown style bands come in and do a live session. Dan describes the bar as “high-end alcohol with a relaxed atmosphere.”

Lastly I must add, if you stumble across the bookcase in the open plan space, take a closer look as you’ll release it’s actually a secret door which leads to the underground Gin Laboratory where you can make your own drinks. Just ask at the bar for more info and special deals.
